Lost in Translation
So there's a girl I know - let's call her D. D has just moved out from Louisville (I think that's the right spelling)Kentuckey, to find love here juts South of Sydney, Australia. When I first tried to pronounce her former city, she could not stop laughing. Apparently only tourists call in "loo-ee-ville". If your a true Southern Belle, you pronounce it something along the lines of "lure-ville", or "lua-vl". Got it.
Why dont we Aussies pronounce our "r"s, she asks. Frankly, I have to admit she's right. We drive "cahs", things take "forevah", and at night we take a "barth" or a "show-ah". Hey! We ADD an 'r' to bath.
I told D she was absolutely right: We dont pronounce our "r"s. But speaking of r's (arse) - for future reference - "fanny" means something COMPLETELY different over here.
